initials ☜☞ iniciales

There are very few examples of initials—capital letters, usually enclosed within a square at the very beginning of a piece of text—in sueltas. When we encounter them in this survey, they are likely to introduce the first word of an Aprobación, Advertencia, or some other front matter or narrative portion of the printed work.

They are considerably larger, dropping or raising several lines below or above the accompanying text. In addition to the floriated initials we see here, there are also historiated ones containing human figures.
