accession number ☜☞ número de inventario
Accession numbers serve a bookkeeping purpose in building library collections.
It was a long practice in libraries to stamp or write a number in ink usually on the first page of a suelta or on the first page of a bound volume, at the time they were acquired. These numbers follow the sequence of arrival of the items, therefore each number is unique. This was done to keep track of items during ordering and cataloguing, and to have a permanent chronological record of accessions.
